My hometown has taken the concept of recycling to heart. To accommodate their regulations, I separate my garbage into five different categories and store each type in a separate garbage can.
I’ve been recycling for many years and, while still usable, my collection of trashcans has become stained and discolored with age. It was time to exchange these elderly containers with replacements that were sturdy and more attractive.
I decided to start with my kitchen garbage can. After searching through the offerings on Amazon, I order a 13-gallon sensor-equipped can from iTouchless.
This 13-gallon trashcan weighs in at 11.4 pounds. It is 27 inches high, 12.5 inches deep, and 10.5 inches wide.
The canister is composed of stainless steel. A rectangular-shaped plastic retainer ring fits into its top.
A black ABS plastic cover, equipped with a 10 x 8.5-inch lid, slides snugly onto the canister. The lid can be opened/closed using a pushbutton or via a motion sensor. Power to the cover’s motor may be supplied by either four D-cell batteries or an optional AC adapter.

This stainless-steel bin fits well in almost any setting and its black-colored plastic top provides excellent contrast.
While it is difficult to determine the lifespan of an electric motor without monitoring it for a lengthy period, this device is only required to lift a lightweight plastic lid. I expect it is capable of performing this function effectively for several years.
The control panel appears to be a decal pasted over a couple of buttons and a sensor. This covering may require replacement during the lifetime of the garbage can if it begins to peel away.
This trashcan is fitted with a replaceable AbsorbX Odor Filter with a lifespan of approximately three months.
This trashcan is equipped with a motion sensor that activates the lid’s opening mechanism when a hand is waved in front of its control panel. Because this type of garbage can is usually located in a high-traffic kitchen area, the sensor is not particularly sensitive. Otherwise, the trashcan’s lid might open every time someone walked by.
I found its lack of sensitivity frustrating the first day and annoying the second. By the third day, I had mastered the technique. Once opened, the lid will maintain a raised position for five seconds.
This garbage can is also equipped with two pushbuttons that can be used to raise and lower its lid. Once opened by this method, it will remain raised for five minutes unless the second push button is pressed.
I have not owned this device long enough to determine its battery life. My best guess is six months to a year. When I am eventually forced to change the batteries, I will update this review.
A simple switch can be swiveled into place, preventing the lid from opening. This device helps to thwart your dog's attempts to access the trashcan for a snack when left alone in the house.
Of course, a dog with the intelligence to master the garbage can’s sensor system might also be bright enough to topple it over and pull off its lid. If that is the case, a 10-pound barbell weight hidden at the bottom of the canister will help.
This container is designed for use with 13-gallon garbage bags. You open the bag, insert it into the canister and drape the open edges over the sides. Then you lift the retaining ring from its position and tuck in the edges of the bag between the retainer’s outer surface and the garbage can. Once the retaining ring is dropped back into its normal position, the bag will be held securely in place.
A 13-gallon trashcan is a perfect size for my kitchen. It has enough capacity to hold a week’s worth of garbage but is not so large that it seems out of place.
This is a well-designed and attractive trashcan that should provide several years of service. If you are searching for a decent-sized, sensor-operated garbage can, the iTouchless 13 Gallon Pet-Proof Sensor Trashcan is worth a close look.
