Battery Operated: A Ranking of 4 Cordless Impact/Drill Systems
Cutting the Cord
Whether you have a construction job, a repair job, or you work on things around the house, a cordless impact or drill can always come in handy to speed up the task. I've been an equipment repairman for five years now, and I've had my fair share of cordless impacts and drills—some quality, some junk. You can buy all four of the brands below at your local Home Depot or Lowe's. Some of them you can even buy on Amazon.com.
What a piece of you know what! This impact is the worst piece of crap I have ever purchased. I bought it at Home Depot during Black Friday (yes just this past November 2016). It quit working about late December. The motor always threw sparks since the date of purchase so I'm assuming the motor burned up. It just went from having a lot of power to having nothing at all. I tried charging the battery on the dinky charger to no avail. It didn't even last a month. Not even one whole month! I never saved my receipt because I though I had purchased a quality product. Apparently not. I will never buy another Ryobi product again. It's just Chinese made junk. 0/5 stars.
3. Porter Cable
I loved my Porter Cable! It was powerful, rigid, and the battery lasted forever. I used it for a few good months. Battery life was usually around 2 months with daily use. It's still a good impact. Only downside is that the charger quit working after a few uses. Hence why I only used it for a few good months. I'm not sure if I just got the only defective charger out of the bunch or if other users have had issues, but I never bought another charger for it, I just bought another impact instead. All in all, I give this product 3/5 stars.
2. Black and Decker
Black and Decker is a jack of all trades. They make all kinds of different products from coffee machines to push mowers. When I bought my first impact and drill set from them, the selling point was the price. Both the drill and the impact looked very cheap compared to sleeker looking branded power tools such as porter cable and Dewalt. 6 years later after using them for thousands of jobs at work and at home, they still work and the batteries still charge up. No joke. Sure, the batteries don't hold a charge for as long as they use to, but this system is still useful after 6 years of hard use. Trust me, I am rough on my tools. The downsides to this system are the outer design. However, if you spend a little extra they do offer a model with a sleeker outer cover. My rating is 4/5 stars. This is the that I use. Dewalt is the best system you can get. I've had my for about 7 months now and I've never been more impressed. The tools are very lightweight but pack a huge punch! The lithium ion batteries never need to be charged. I usually get about 1-2 months out of a charge and I use them daily at work and even a little on the weekends. Price wise they are high but you really do get what you pay for. I paid about the same for the Porter Cable system. This system is superior in every way. It's more powerful while weighing way less which makes my workload much easier. I rate the Dewalt cordless impact and drill driver system at 5/5 stars! Dewalt impact and drill driver
