Choosing Paint for Exterior Doors

Using the right paint on the exterior doors of your home is important for preventing premature wear and color fading. A good exterior paint is durable and covers well in less coats. Nothing is more annoying than having to apply multiple coats to get your color to cover right.

Another important consideration is whether or not the paint is self-priming and compatible with the type of door you're painting. Some paints work fine on wood, but maybe not on metal, or fiberglass, at least without first applying a separate coat of primer.

I use acrylic latex paint the most when painting doors outside. The products I use are more resistant to mildew than oil-based coatings and cleanup easy with soap and water.

My Favorite Sherwin Williams Exterior Door Paint

In my twenty years of painting, I've used several brands, including PPG and Benjamin Moore, both of which I like, but Sherwin Williams is the paint I've used the most. Even before I started my painting business, the company I worked for used their paint.

This article focuses on Sherwin Williams exterior paints that I've had the most success with in my career when painting exterior doors and trim.

Duration Exterior Acrylic Latex

This stuff is expensive, but very durable as an exterior door paint. The paint is thick, but brushes on really nice with awesome coverage. Duration is compatible with multiple substrates. I've painted wood doors with this product, using a brush and roller, as well as spraying vinyl window shutters and aluminum siding with my airless sprayer.

The satin, or gloss finish, is best for painting doors. The gloss finish is shinier and easier to clean. The paint dries in about one hour. Duration is advertised as a one coat paint, but I always apply two coats for enhanced durability and sheen.

Things I like about this paint:

  • Mildew resistance
  • No peeling, or cracking
  • Good hide
  • Dries fast
  • Good Coverage

I've never had a callback using this paint. Duration provides resistance to tannin bleed and rust stains with two coats, but I'll usually spot prime surface discoloration with a separate stain blocking primer first.

SuperPaint Exterior Acrylic Latex

I used both the interior and exterior SuperPaint for many years before switching over to Duration for my exterior painting projects. SuperPaint is a great product with durability and coverage similar to Duration, but costs less.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money on paint for your exterior doors, this is a good mid-range paint that lasts around five to seven years before a re-coat is needed. Both the resistance to fading and mildew with this paint is pretty good.

Things I like about this paint:

  • Mildew and fade resistance
  • Cheaper than Duration
  • Durable and washable finish
  • Excellent coverage

Pro Industrial Multi-Surface Acrylic (Interior/Exterior)

The best way to paint exterior doors with this product is with an airless sprayer. Brushing and rolling is a little tricky because the paint dries really fast. I've painted kitchen cabinets with this product and exterior metal and wood doors.

The paint dries as tough as nails in about twenty minutes. You can re-coat the surface in about two hours. Multi-surface acrylic paint is inexpensive compared to Duration, but very washable when used on metal and wood doors.

Things I like about this paint:

  • Dries very hard
  • Dries very fast for re-coating
  • Washable finish
  • Good blocking
  • Low price
  • Works on multiple surfaces as the name implies

This paint produces a ton of dry fall dust when sprayed, but levels out on the surface surprisingly well for a product with super fast dry time. You can brush and roll the paint, but you have to work fast. The paint will sag very easily if you lay it on too heavy.

I don't remember for sure what the color on the door was, but I think possibly Tricorn Black (Sherwin Williams).

What is the name of the color on this door?

Matt G. (author) from United States on June 21, 2020:

You can use Super Paint exterior on a metal door. If the door's unpainted I would prime the door first.

Hello. Can superpaint be used on an exterior metal door?
