Tools and Materials

  • New toilet seat
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Screwdriver
  • Small pair of pliers

The Important Components

Generally, the seat is attached to the ceramic bowl with two long stainless steel screws and nuts. The important parts of a pan, lid, and ring are illustrated in the drawing below. It is useful to know these parts and how they interrelate to keep the seat in a good position without sliding or wobbling.

Fixing and Tightening

Step 1

The toilet ring is generally attached to a ceramic pan with two long screws that goes through the porcelain at the rear of the bowl. The stainless steel screws are supported by two nuts beneath. In the front face of the ring, look for a little channel that is provided to assist you while fixing or tightening the seat over. After that, utilize a screwdriver to fix up both the lid and the ring.

In an economical pan, the screws are produced using plastic. Generally, in most of the companies utilize steel screws, and more expensive models may even utilize stainless steel or brass. Be careful with plastic screws while fixing or tightening your new ring.

Step 2

In case your ring is loose, then it might wobble forward and backward, out of alignment with the edge of the bowl. Rectify the ring so that it placed uniformly on the top of a bowl. You can take a seat to test it out and fix it as per your comfort.

Step 3

Now rotate the screwdriver clockwise to tighten up. Keep in mind: "turn right to tight, turn left to lose." Generally, there is a nut with a wing connected to protect the nut from turning. You have to choose which screwdriver is the ideal fit. Ensure that the screwdriver head is sufficiently fit into the head of a bolt. In case the screwdriver is small then the bolt will not rotate and you will not able to tighten it. In case if the screwdriver is too little, then the fastener won't turn. The friction from sliding screwdriver will rapidly wear out the bolt and it could even break it.

Step 4

In case bolt keeps rotating without tightening up then hold the nut beneath with small pliers. Clasp onto the end of the nut, and clamp it sturdily as you screw the bolt. When you have rotated the bolt few times then the arm on the nut must stop it from rotating any longer.

Step 5

Now continue screwing till the seat is fixed tight. When seat does not move forward and backward, ensure that lid is closing well.

Installing New Toilet Seat

If the bolts are broken and body of the seat is in bad condition then you must think to buy a new ring for the sake of longevity rather than wasting money on repairing. You can buy new a ring and lid from your local home improvement store or from Amazon or eBay.

Type of Seat

Before you proceed, identify which type of ring you need. There are two types of seat shapes available: elongated toilet and round. The round seats are completely in circular shape, whereas the elongated seats are egg and oval shaped. After checking shape and size of your ring purchase the one which is matching with your pan. If possible try to get a ring made by a similar brand or company that manufactures bowl. If you buy off brand ring, then it might not fit correctly.
