Working as a professional interior designer for many decades, I've been involved in design-and-build residential building projects.
What are honeycomb window blinds, and why are they such popular window treatments? Is it because of their energy-saving qualities, or because they have a modern minimalist look?
The use of these contemporary energy-saving window treatments is fast becoming an interior design trend, as they are now used extensively in both residential and commercial interior design and decoration projects. And not only for aesthetic reasons, but also for their durability, 'green' properties and money-saving measures.
What Are Honeycomb Blinds?
Honeycomb blinds, also called cellular or accordion shades, are window coverings that are made up of varying sizes of single, double, or triple honeycomb cells (constructed like honeycombs). This cellular design forms pockets of air that act as insulation from heat and cold, keeping the indoor temperature comfortable all year round.
They are made of soft fabrics like bonded polyester, spun lace and cotton. The fabrics have a mylar backing applied, to allow for compression of the fabric, making it appear paper-like. Cellular blinds are also made from soft paper.
Energy-Saving Properties of Honeycomb Blinds
The energy-saving qualities of honeycomb window blinds are one of the reasons many homeowners and residents find it their best choice. The size of each cell contributes to the amount of energy you can save. The larger cells are more efficient than the smaller ones and are therefore more energy efficient.
Large windows allow in drafts of air, and this is the biggest culprit when it comes to air leaks in most homes. In this instance, its best to use double or triple cell honeycomb blinds to save on energy costs. Single cell blinds are best used for smaller windows that have fewer incidences of air leaks.
Both single and double cell honeycombs will block harmful UV rays from filtering into the room, because they regulate the amount of natural light that filters into a room, a great way of controlling light infiltration. Aside from energy-saving qualities and UV rays-blocking properties, they absorb sound, which helps control unwanted and nuisance noise from the outdoors.
Decorative Properties of Cellular Blinds
‘Hard’ window treatments like bamboo window blinds, louvre blinds, and wood-slat window blinds are current and trendy, and so are honeycomb window blinds, also categorized as hard window treatments.
Because of their distinguished look, crisp and clean appearance and minimalist style, cellular blinds are considered highly attractive, particularly with their wide range of colours making them a decorator’s delight. They are designed to roll up and down in an accordion fashion, another attractive feature of these blinds—perfect for the trending minimalist look.
Cellular blinds always come as ready-made 'non-sewn window treatments' and can be combined with 'soft' window treatments (curtains and drapes) for a more appealing and dramatic effect. However, many prefer the blinds to stand out on their own and be colour coordinated with other furniture or furnishings within the room.
Additional Features of Honeycomb Window Treatments
There is a wide range of honeycomb blinds that will delight decorators. Other attractive features include the following:
- Mostly available ready-made but can be customized as special orders to fit in with any décor
- Range from light control blinds to blackout blinds—sheer, semi-sheer, semi-opaque and opaque honeycomb window blinds
- Creates a sleek, unified look
- Cord lifting operations
- Cordless lifting systems
- Remote-controlled lifting systems
- Easy operation with enhanced child and pet safety measures
- Top down/bottom up features
- Continuous cord loop system
- Motorized wand
- Hundreds of colours and patterns to choose from
- Of all window coverings, honeycomb blinds require less maintenance.
- Perfect for sliding doors. Larger pleats (up to 2+” wide) are in fact lighter per sq m (or sq ft) than smaller sizes, so they won’t sag on sliding doors.
- Offers a modern and stylish appearance coupled with outstanding insulation properties, an inexpensive solution for homes with many windows
Cellular Blinds: Functional, Long-Lasting and Beautiful
In the real estate industry, many interior designers and decorators offer honeycomb window blinds to their clients, especially in areas where the weather is either very cold in the winter or unbearably hot in the summer. The larger the honeycomb cell size, the better its insulation properties.
All in all, honeycomb window blinds are extremely functional, have an enduring quality and provide a long-lasting beauty that will greatly enhance any interior space within the home. They also make a great foundation for a custom layered eclectic style when framed with curtains, swags, valances, drapes or other types of soft window treatments.

Great hub, I think I'm going to buy some of these for my windows. I recently took down some old drapes and discovered that our window in the living room is actually beautiful and big without the drapes. There is another window in the living room and two in the dining room which need updating. I think these honeycomb blinds will do the trick. Thank you very much!
