I have a 15,000 BTU window AC that's only about five years old. When I set it to cool, I hear the compressor turning on, but then the compressor shuts off after about five seconds and doesn't come on at all after that. The fans work fine. This happens every time I turn it on, and it doesn't get cool at all. Do you think it's a capacitor issue or maybe something else?

Answer

It could be the capacitator, but I think it's something else. Did you store it sideways? Like a refrigerator, you'd have to set it upright for a day, so the oil goes where it's supposed to. Whatever it is it's locking it up and shutting itself down, so don't keep starting it. Let it sit and see if it might start tomorrow.
