I turned the heater gas knob from "on" to "off" a couple of weeks ago. (There's also a "pilot" option on the knob.) Now, when I turn it back on, the heater doesn't work. How can I start the heater again?

It sounds like you need to light the pilot. Turn to the pilot. Get a match or lighter by the pilot, then press down on the button. Once lit, hold the button down for another 30-45 seconds. Next, let go and turn the switch to "on." I also wrote an article about this in regards to water if you need more insight. They are basically the same process.
