Most people would be disgusted if they saw the inside drum of their washing machine, especially top loaders. I have worked on several washing machines over the last few years, and remember being shocked about how gross the inside drum gets the first time I saw one, and it was only a couple years old. Every single one I have had apart was disgusting. I recommend removing the outer drum once a year, so the inner drum can be cleaned, what do you think about that?
If you are able to carry out this kind of maintenance, then yes, removing and cleaning the drum each year is a good way of servicing and cleaning the machine. But most people will not have the technical skills/time/money to pay someone to do this. I personally prefer to run regular cleaning cycles through mine instead to keep on top of the grime and build up.
