The X-Sense XS03-WX Smart Smoke Detector

The X-Sense XS03-WX Smart Smoke Detector

Over the last few months, I’ve been replacing the elderly smoke detectors within my house with modern and more sophisticated devices. The final room to be updated in this manner was the kitchen.

My best option was to install a Wi-Fi-capable smoke detector. Then, if a fire started while I was away, I would receive a notification over my phone. On the other hand, if I managed to burn the toast, the same phone could be used to silence the noisy alarm.

Wi-Fi Setup

I utilized Google Play to download and install the X-Sense Home Security application. This program is also available at the Apple Store.

Once X-Sense Home Security was installed, I ensured my phone was connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network.

I removed the plastic film blocking the smoke detector’s battery connection and pushed the battery fully into its slot. Then I held the smoke detector’s Test/Silence button until it began to flash blue.

The final step was to open X-Sense Home Security and add the new smoke detector. After completing the pairing process, the smoke detector was added to the application’s device list.

Installation

I used the bracket as a template, holding it against the ceiling and drilling two small holes. Then I enlarged each hole sufficiently to press in the associated plastic anchors. Once the anchors were in place, I used the provided screws to attach the bracket.

Then I held the XS03-WX detector against its bracket, twisting clockwise until it was fully locked into position.

Despite the possibility of false alarms due to my deplorable cooking skills, I did install this smoke detector in the kitchen. However, I cheated, mounting the device as far away from the stove as possible.

Once the smoke detector was installed, I tapped the side button to run a functional test.

The Practical Test

After the XS03-WX was set up and securely mounted, I lit a cigarette and puffed a cloud of smoke directly beneath the device. As it detected the smoke, the alarm began to blare. A few seconds later, I received an alert on my phone, notifying me of the danger. I opened the application and selected Silence. At this point, the audio alarm ceased.

Monitoring Service

The application allows you to sign up for one of two monitoring services. I chose not to participate, but if you are often away from home, these services could be beneficial.

Overall Impression

It was a relatively simple task to set up the Wi-Fi for this smoke detector and mount it against my kitchen ceiling.

Since this device is integrated into the Wi-Fi system, smoke alarms are automatically dispatched to my phone. I especially appreciate the ability to use the application to silence the alarm temporarily.

If you are searching for an effective Wi-Fi-capable smoke detector, I recommend the X-sense XS03-WX.
